“To create is to cultivate meaning, to cultivate meaning, we must create”
Cosmetic beauty gets a bad rap. I understand why, it can seem so superficial and phony. Changing the way we look or altering our natural features can be portrayed as insecure or narcissistic, I get that. But as someone who has always had a love affair with all things beauty, my first order of duty, is to change that perspective.
Here is what beauty is to me
“Beauty is more than a product, person, or place. Beauty is a perspective. A perspective of deep pleasure. It illicits enjoyment, fulfillment, and meaning. It ignites inexplicable joy internally. Beauty is something we all obtain, we just have to see it.”
Beauty isn't about face proportions or flawless your skin. It isn't about attention or gushing expressions. Beauty is about creating fulfillment and pursuing play. It is art. It is painting, sculpting, decorating, and drawing. And in my bathroom… lip-syncing to loud music while lining my lips is always required; along with dancing. My girls love it.
For me, beauty is the catalyst for creativity, and cosmetic creativity is my favorite expression of ingenuity. Cosmetics are the medium with the body as the canvas; creating a kinetic sculpture of divine nature. Time accelerates when I am creating with makeup. Part of my play time, is playing with products and testing new tools. Ask my husband; he knows this is the hobby of which I can dedicate hours to, along with writing and reading.
For the record, the glam look takes me at least 2 hours. I got teased all the time in my teens for being the last one ready. It wasn't something I wanted to rush through, it was something I found fulfillment in. Fast forward 10 years and reality is I don't have hours in the day to dedicate to cultivating creative cosmetic beauty. As you can see, my babies are with me everywhere. I work with them, write with them, and play with them. It is important to me that they witness my creative processes; creativity is not taught, it is caught.
Reality is I usually have 10 minutes to dedicate to my make-up artistry. I DO dedicate one day a week where I allow myself to play for 2 hours, but that is not the norm. So I wanted to share the products I use on a daily basis, that are apart of my 10 minute routine. These are my favorites for an everyday look; and what I wear on the daily.
Foundation: Bareminerals Complexion Rescue Gel. There is a reason why this beauty won the Allure Readers Choice Awards! This product is my face saver in the summer. Containing SPF 30 and deep pigments, it goes on lightweight and sheer, but has buildable coverage. The main reason I love it, it looks like I am not wearing makeup and yet creates a dewy glow of sheer bliss and covers imperfections. I don't have flawless skin, I have acne, scars, wrinkles, and freckles, this gives great coverage while still looking natural. Plus they have 16 colors!
Setting Powder: Bareminerals Original Loose Powder. This is a cult favorite. This product is incredible and does wonders for your face without caking on the layers. Winning 10 years of Allure’s Beauty Awards for original foundation, it is also light, buildable, and comes in 30 shades. I always have this in my bag.
Brows: Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade. I don't use this everyday, but I use it most days. It is highly pigmented and waterproof, which is what makes it great to use in the summer. Even with my oily skin, this stuff doesn't budge. It took me so long to buy it, and now that I have it, I will never go without it.
Mascara: Maybeline Great Lashes. If a product was to be voted “most popular” this would be it. Winning Allure’s Readers Choice Awards since 1997, this formula is most loved for sure. Since I use false lashes, I just need something durable and dark that I can fill in with. This stuff is my go-to drugstore buy. Plus it conditions as it sits. I love it.
Lashes: Koko Lashes in 'Amore'. I am obsessed with false eyelashes. Ive been wearing them non-stop for almost 2 years and have tried so many brands. My favorite right now are KoKo lashes. They are more on the dramatic side BUT they are thick, voluptuous, and well made. Plus if you clean them correctly, you can get between 30-50 uses out of them. And that price… you just cant beat it.
Lipstick: MAC Viva Glam II. Oh Mac. You have my heart. This lipstick is semi-sheer and super pigmented, as all MACS products are. It is a muted pink beige with a satin finish. Costing around $18 per tube, it is a staple in my bag.
Makeup is my creative outlet. It is one of the unique contributions I bring to the table in this world. Along with writing, photography, dancing, and reading; it is one of my greatest passions. We all need an outlet to create. Wether is is knitting, acting, mechanics, interior design, dancing, origami - doesn't matter. If we want to make meaning, we must create.
What passions do you have?
If you had 9 extra hours in the week, what would you create?
